Bernie Sanders Vows to “End Institutional Racism”

Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders stood down when interrupted by Black Lives Matter activists in Seattle. Shortly after the interruption by protesters, however, Sanders released a platform that focused heavily on ending racial profiling and police brutality among within minority communities.

During a campaign stop in South Carolina, the Vermont U.S. Senator and presidential hopeful doubled down on his platform, this time promising to “end institutional racism” if he becomes president.

Sanders had initially planned to visit South Carolina in June, but canceled that event after the Charleston killing of nine members of Emanuel AME Church.

At the event, Sanders mentioned Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Freddie Gray and Walter Scott while discussing his racial platform.

“We are going to end institutional racism and we are going to transform and make changes in the criminal justice system that isn’t working,” he said. “When a police officer breaks the law, that police officer must be held accountable. We need new rules on the use of force.”

Sanders observed that although Charleston shooter Dylann Roof had been inspired at least in part by white supremacist hate groups, there hadn’t been a noticeable crackdown within these groups.

“I’m not just talking about somebody who walked into a Bible study class, prayed with the people in that group and then took out a gun and killed nine people. I’m talking about the hundreds of hate groups that exist in this country today whose only function is fomenting of hatred of African Americans, gays, immigrants, Jews.”

According to a CNN poll, Sanders is still trailing Hillary Clinton by double digits. The poll found 29 percent of Democratic and Democratic-leaning voters supported Sanders, compared with 47 percent for Clinton.

Sanders is, however, gaining momentum, with people showing up hours ahead of time to stand in line to attend his rally.
