Where two worlds collide, spoken word and rap, DeeVine is a breath of fresh air to the rap game, giving healed bad bitch energy. Her cocky flow, blazing delivery, penetrative lyricism, and divine presence arguably allows her to stand out from the rest.

Growing up writing has always served as an escape from the outside world. From writing short stories, to poetry, to raps; words have always been her preferred method of expression. She began rapping her spoken word around 15 with influences by Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu and Foxy Brown. She made her underground debut in a group known as Frontdoe (Lady Frontdoe); which can be found on Youtube.

While she is not new to rap, due to her upbringing, she eventually decided to give up on her childhood passion and joined the military. After going through a rough year and left with nothing but pen and paper, rather than journaling her experiences she decided to share her story in a curated project. After getting reacquainted with her first love; music, she released her Debut EP: This… Is Personal in Feb 2020. This was the first official published project that introduced the world to her passion for music.

Since her debut which served solely as an audio diary, DeeVine has since penetrated the game with her newest released single “Remind Yah”. This track has been cosigned by 97.9 and TJ Chapman, DeeVine is on her way to shake up the rap game.

Tell us about your latest releases, what inspired you to create them?

Sweet was inspired by the fact that since I’ve embarked on this spiritual journey and constantly striving to operate at my highest level, people tend to take that as a weakness. I’m a Pisces woman who understands that there is strength in femininity and I’ve portrayed that however I feel like every now and again you gotta remind people where you come from. That’s why I said “ain’t sht sweet about me, 9-0-4 out them swamps with them leaves” cause if you know anything about Duval county, sht can get real ugly. I just prefer not to show that side of myself unless absolutely necessary.

What is unique about you and your music?

What is unique about me and my music is that I’m a multifaceted spiritual individual that prefers to allow that to show in my presence as well as my music. While most people believe that you should pick 1 thing, 1 image and live in that. I can’t be boxed in so instead of trying to, so I can fit in I choose to just live my truth and speak my truth.

What shaped your music?

My pain, my trauma, my experiences, and the fact that most often than not I feel like an underdog.

When did you realize you were going to make music professionally?

My words and my voice have always been my power and strength since I was a child. I used to be in a rap group in high school and wanted to pursue music then but I was surrounded by people that didn’t see my dreams like I did so I impulsively joined the military to get away from that energy. Unfortunately during that time I couldn’t write like I used to. & In 2018 when I first moved to Dallas for a fresh start, that also marked the beginning of my spiritual awakening. I went through a hard time and was only left with writing. During that same period I kept seeing 11-11 that was a sign to me to take it seriously.

What type of music do you listen to?

I listen to a lot of neo-soul, old school rap, Caribbean and Afro beats music.

What inspires you to write music?

The black experience. Life inspires me. For the longest I had a hard time expressing myself so I resorted to writing poetry and music where I found that I could effortlessly express what I was going through and how I was feeling. It also is more susceptible to the average human rather than just venting talking about how you feel.

What do you do when you don’t do music (creative or otherwise) and that you are passionate about?

I like to say I’m a self-proclaimed tv critic lol I watch movies and tv shows. I like to read, skate, make content, and I’m very passionate about dance and sensuality.

Happiness to you is…

Happiness to me is next to liberation and I think that looks different for everyone. For me, that looks like waking up everyday doing what I love which fulfills me.

What do you wish you were told when you first started making music that you think would help artists just starting out?

Unfortunately we live in a world where most people follow the hype, you gotta support yourself first and not care about the lack of support you may receive right away and in return like attracts like, you’ll attract support from others! Also, stay true to yourself and your sound, you don’t need to sound like the “next whoever” to make it! You just need to sound like the best you!

Tell us about your upcoming projects…

My upcoming music and projects will allow the world and my listeners to get to know ALL sides of me, the masculine and the feminine. Like I said I’m multifaceted and instead of just trying to live up to one sound, I love all sounds and all sounds are what inspired me to do music anyways. So, you can expect a little of this and a little of that. From real rap mc sht, to melodic soft and sensual music because as a black woman I represent all of that.
