PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA — A mentally ill inmate died in jail after being incarcerated for four months for allegedly stealing $5 worth of snacks from a 7-Eleven in April.

According to the Guardian, while in Hampton Roads regional jail in Portsmouth, Jamycheal Mitchell, 24, refused to take medication to treat his schizophrenia and bipolar disorder and also refused to eat. He was deemed unfit for trial but ended up waiting in his cell for six months without proper treatment. He was kept in jail awaiting transfer to a mental health hospital. Representatives at the jail claim that he was fed, and a nurse came to visit him regularly, the Washington Post reported.

According to the Guardian, family members were not allowed to visit because Mitchell didn't put them on a list of accepted visitors due to his unbalanced mental state. Interviews with Mitchell showed that he was suffering from mental illness.

Jason Dillon, a prison inmate who delivered food to Mitchell, told the Washington Post that he would often see Mitchell naked and muttering to himself. Dillon said MItchell would smear feces on himself and on the walls of his cell and had tried to flush his clothes and bed sheets into the toilet.

The Guardian reported that Mitchell's aunt estimated he had lost 65 pounds when she saw him in court. His body was found in his cell around 5:44 a.m. on Wednesday August 19th.
